Creekside Community Centre shows Olympic Spirit

The Creekside Community Centre was the site of a “rekindling” of the Olympic Spirit on Sunday, February 9 as pin traders and volunteers alike descended to relive the glory of four years ago.

A Royal Canadian Mounted Police colour guard escorted Vancouver 2010 Volunteers, pin traders and the public around the plaza at 12 Noon to officially open the celebration festivities.

And if pin trading wasn’t enough, Olympic Champion and Vancouver 2010 gold medal winning athlete in skicross Ashleigh McIvor was also in attendance to greet fans and sign autographs.

Other activities included a West Coast Lumberjack Show; a meet and greet with the Vancouver 2010 Blue Jacket Volunteers; an extreme snowboarding simulator; toddler rink, and toddler and children’s hockey by Vancouver Sportball; caricatures, button making, face painting and photo station; and live entertainment, Olympic memorabilia, pin trading (naturalement), and door prizes; and “Canada House” and “Russia House” cultural-themed crafts, cookie decorating, maple syrup pops, and flag making

All in all … a wonderful day basking in the warm afterglow of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games … and celebrating the start of Sochi 2014!

Team USA Tries to Create ‘Pinsanity’ on Facebook and Mobile

OlympicsPinsanityGroundhogIt’s been called the No. 1 spectator sport during the Olympic Games. Pin trading — the buying, selling and trading of commemorative pins at Olympic Games — first became popular in the 1980s.

It’s since turned into an industry in itself — and a sport anybody can qualify at.

Heading into Thursday’s start of the Sochi Winter Olympics, the U.S.Olympic Committee has launched its first social-media and mobile game around pin trading.

Vancouver still enjoying Games legacies

van_2010_logoFour years on from Vancouver 2010, the Canadian city continues to enjoy the legacies created by hosting the Winter Games, from sustainable community centres to public art, community involvement and transportation infrastructure.

In particular, new facilities that were built for the Games have provided very tangible, long-term legacies for the city thanks to planning that saw them designed, constructed, and converted with specific post-Games uses in mind.

The Richmond Olympic Oval, for instance, which hosted speed skating during the Games, has since been transformed into a community facility that includes an indoor track, two ice rinks, 18 badminton courts, 13 FIVB regulation volleyball courts, 10 FIBA regulation basketball courts, three FIFA regulation indoor football pitches, 16 international sized table tennis tables and a 2,300-square-foot fitness centre with stunning views of the North Shore mountains and Fraser River.
